COPS are working hard behind the scenes on a new project to place a new memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum . The idea is to erect a single memorial where the names of ALL the police officers who have died in the line of duty (whilst serving for the British Police Force), are on view.
We have come up with the idea because the National Police Memorial in London remembers less than 50% of over 4,000 Police Officers who have been identified as being killed in the line of duty. Their names are recorded on a Roll of Honour protected by a glass screen, with only a few names visible at any given time.
COPS knows from experience and by talking to many survivors, that they want a memorial where the names of ALL deceased Officers are clearly visible. That is why COPS have taken up this campaign.
We have been in discussions with the Police Mutual Assurance Society (PMAS) , who are the custodians of "The Beat" at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, and with the Police Roll of Honour Trust , to examine the feasibility of enhancing "The Beat" with a new memorial. This would have inscribed on it the names of all 4,000 Officers who have been identified as being killed whilst on duty.
We are delighted to announce that the Royal British Legion , who administer the arboretum, have recently advised us that they have no objections in principle to such a project, subject of course to an agreeable design.
COPS in conjunction with the Police Mutual Assurance Society, and the Police Roll of Honour Trust will therefore be progressing with this project as soon as possible. Our friends at the Police Mutual Assurance Society (PMAS) will lead this campaign.
We promise to keep you posted of new developments.
