Producing this collection of doggie tails (alright, tales!) has been a
pure labour of love for everyone involved. It is our honest belief that
all our readers will quickly see why it has been such a pleasure
putting it together.
The stories are true accounts of things that actually happened.
Well, they started as true stories, but we all know how policemen's
tales improve with every telling across the canteen table or the bar
of the "Crown & Horses".
They reflect a time when the business of policing and the
attitude of those who did it were different from what goes on today.
The stories cover the years from the 1950s to the 1980s, and it is a fact that many of the events you will read about, while not unusual in their day, could not be contemplated in today's climate of targets, strict conformity and (worst of all) political correctness. In the period covered within these pages there was room for individuality and for personalities. Every parade room saw them at the start of every shift - but now, of course, there are no pre-shift parades and certainly little room for characterful coppers!
Inside these pages you'll find the memoirs of ordinary officers who went about their duties in just one of the Met's dog sections, but they reflect what went on in other parts of the Metropolitan Police as well as all the other forces throughout Britain. Several threads bind them all together. The lads were all coppers of course and they all worked with dogs, but on top of that is the fact that in those days you had to be a special kind of copper to become a dog man. And if you are or have been a dog handler you may well see yourself in our pages, even if you were hundreds of miles away at the time. Let's hear it for the dogs and their handlers!
£4.99 plus £1.90 p&p and can be purchased from: john@policegifts.co.uk and cheques please to Ex Met Police Dog Handlers.
Retired Strathclyde detective Harry Morris has published some books about his time in the police service. They are a great read, very humorous, and even include some stories about our very own Jim McNulty.
Harry is out to show a side of our police force that we don't often see; the lighter side. His time with the Glasgow and Strathclyde constabulary or "polis" for short, hasn't robbed Harry of his sense of humour. Every wily witness, cocky con, and sarcastic sergeant he ever ran up against is here in page after page of funny stories.
Full of hilarious anecdotes, oddball characters, quick comeback and unlikely excuses, his books show Glasgow humour at its finest. Every funny tale, tall or true, of Harry's twentynine year police career is here, and there's no shortage of laughs in these rib tickling stories from the rank and file.
